South Asian American Vascular Society- Medtronic Travelling Fellowship

South Asian American Vascular Surgery Society is pleased to announce the availability of a fellowship opportunity. The primary purpose of the SAAVS –Medtronic Traveling Fellowship is to provide the recipient with the opportunity to visit a Vascular Surgery center in India for a period of two weeks. This fellowship provides an opportunity for an educational exchange; learn practice patterns, management of unusual vasculopathies unique to South Asian Subcontinent. SAAVS believes that this fellowship should enhance the opportunities for collaboration and engagement between United States and Indian Vascular practitioners.
This award is not intended to support specific research interests but rather to assist the fellow in a unique opportunity for travel and professional exchange within established vascular centers.

Financial Support

The fellowship is made possible with generous educational support from Medtronic Inc. This award pays up to US $4000 for expenses of travel, stay and other expenses that may be incurred during period of visit including presentation of a brief report at the SAAVS annual meeting. The fellowship monies may not be used for other purposes.

Eligibility for Selection

Be an Active Member of SVS (SVS Candidate members, fellows or residents are not eligible). Application process requires a sponsoring SAAVS member.
Have completed a postgraduate vascular training program within the past 5 years
Be committed to an academic career in vascular surgery and have obtained an academic appointment in a medical school or freestanding clinic devoted to excellence in medical education or practice of vascular surgery.

Application Procedure

Application materials listed below should be submitted to the office of SAAVS on or before April 15th, 2018. Incomplete applications may be rejected at the discretion of the selection committee comprising of SAAVS members. Decisions regarding the award will be mailed to applicants in April.

  1. 500-word essay describing the objectives of the applicant’s interest in fellowship and linking these to his or her career goals
  2. List of the centers that the applicant wants to visit. (Detailed list is available in )
  3. Curriculum vitae (PDF format)
  4. Three letters of recommendation (in PDF format) from (1) the applicant’s division chief (2) the chairperson of the department of surgery of the institution in which the applicant holds a faculty appointment, and (3) a colleague
  5. Sponsorship from a SAAVS member in good standing

Fellow’s Report to Committee

A report covering the experience should be prepared and forwarded to the office of SAAVS within three months of completion of the fellowship travel. This typed report should be three to five pages and should summarize activities during the fellowship. Although factual statements of activities should be included, fellowship recipients are encouraged to place these within an overall context of their impact on their education and maturation. Any publication of the fellowship activities should acknowledge the SAAVS- Medtronic Traveling Fellowship Award from the South Asian American Vascular Society .Further the recipient is also expected to provide a summary of the experience at the annual SAAVS meeting held during the Vascular Annual Meeting.

South Asian American Vascular Society- Vascular Society of India Travelling Fellow

SAAVS has recently approved a fellowship for a vascular surgeon from India ,  in practice for 5 or less years since graduation to visit a center of their choice hosted by a SAAVS member in United States.  Up to $2500 is available in grants that should help offset some of the cost of travel and stay during this 2-3 week visiting program.  Please look out for more communication from Vascular Society of India regarding selection process.  It is expected that the applicant uses this opportunity also to make plans visiting  Vascular Annual Meeting – 2018.  Selected applicants are expected to present at the Annual SAAVS meeting.
